Yoga retreats: why should I attend one?

Updated: Jun 11

The offer of yoga retreats has grown enormously in recent years and the choice is vast. But why is it worth participating in one of these events and what are the benefits?

Getting away from your daily routine, taking yourself to an isolated place or one that favors moments of silence and introspection, engaging yourself to the practice and being fully present, .... Below you will find some of the reasons why I believe it is essential, at least once a year, to take part to these breaks. And I say this first of all as a practitioner who loves these periods of voluntary isolation and "retreats" as soon as I can!

A precious opportunity

  • TO DISCONNECT (don't escape!) FROM YOUR ROUTINE and DEDICATE SOME TIME TO YOURSELF, LET YOUR ENERGIES NOT BE FURTHER DISPERSED AMONG THE MOST VARIOUS ACTIVITIES BUT LET THEM BE PRESERVED AND REFUELED;

  • TO LIMIT EXTERNAL STIMULI and ENJOY SILENCE;

  • TO CONNECT WITH YOURSELF, WITH YOUR PHYSICAL AND SUBTLE BODY and DEEPEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF YOURSELF OR AT LEAST BECOME AWARE OF THE STAGE OF LIFE YOU ARE IN;

  • TO CREATE CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS and DO IT WITH PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR INTEREST IN YOGA and, JUST LIKE YOU, HAVE QUESTIONS AND DOUBTS THAT WILL BE NICE TO EXPLORE TOGETHER, ENRICHING THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS;

  • TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE and ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE VULNERABLE IN A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT;

  • TO DEEPEN YOUR PRACTICE IN A BROADER SENSE AND WITHOUT THINKING OF TIME;

  • TO DRAW NEW INSPIRATION TO BRING BACK TO YOUR DAILY LIFE;

  • TO MAKE SPACE and, SIMPLY, ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE WITHOUT HAVING TO PROVE ANYTHING.

Just as teachers are different, the retreats' proposal is different but, generally, a retreat - and NOT a yoga vacation - should include

  • simplicity and essentiality;

  • respect of the schedule;

  • different practices throughout the day that do not only include asanas;

  • simple rules of behavior including no alcohol, limiting the use of devices and contact with the outside;

  • moments of silence.

A retreat that is guided with care and attention on one side and welcomed with openness on the other can be a transformative experience that will help you re-center yourself, find clarity, and recover physical and mental energy.
